@thelaughingboy what do u mean? every one know’s bob dylan is a thief, but so wot !!

  2. thelaughingboy says:

For anyone who thinks that Dylan stole this tune from the Clancy Brothers, this is a quote from Liam himself: “I met the young Dylan on 4th St. in the Village one morning as I was rushing to rehearsal ‘Hey Liam, hey man. I wrote a song to the tune of Brennan on the Moor last night. Wanta hear it man?, only 15 verses man, wanna hear it’.”- Liam Clancy. So Dylan told Liam about it. So it’s more of a tribute really.

@Chuckyarla search Clancy Brothers-Regis and Kathy Lee 3/17/95

  4. DwnAszPunk says:

@Chuckyarla Bob Dylan and the Clancy’s were good friends both being part of the folk revivals in their respective countries. They were well aware he took this tune from them, in fact there used to be a video on youtube of the Clancy’s Singing Ramblin Gamblin Willie ;)

  5. Chuckyarla says:

Bosulvenowl6 is also absolutly right in the fact that it is a note for note theft of “Brennen on the Moor”. I am sure Mr. Zimmerman would agree

  6. Bosulvenowl6 says:

    The melody is from Ireland.
    From a song called:
    “Brennan On The Moor”
Bob got this melody from the Clancy brothers, the Clancy’s came from Ireland

  7. 1mojoone says:

Bob Dylan could sing a toilet paper commercial and it would be his own. Best song writer in the US and he is followed closely by Neil Young.

Always been a favorite of mine. When I was high school (15 years ago) I played this song in music class for an assignment explaining song structures verse/melody/etc. Everyone though it was lame and made fun of me, except for the two musicians in the class. Time has shown who the REAL losers were…
